Katumwa for 3-day workshop ahead of Angelique Kidjo concert

The self-taught saxophonist will be holding a three-day workshop ahead of his upcoming concert with an aim of enlightening, encouraging and supporting the youth with a passion in the arts.

The workshop starting today, April 24, will run up to April 26 and will involve music lessons, a mentorship programme, as well as charitable donations of music instruments to the youth in attendance.

The three-day workshop is a run-up to Katumwa’s April 30 concert and is facilitated by the Isaiah Katumwa Foundation in partnership with Chris Lang, a visiting American saxophonist Katumwa has worked with for 20 years. The concert will feature multi-Grammy award winner, Angelique Kidjo and Darren Rahn.

“I partnered Chris Lang, a man who played a great role in kick-starting my dream, to inspire these young geniuses into achieving their own dreams too,” Katumwa said.

“My story is what continues to motivate me. I was handed my very first saxophone by Chris Lang back in 2000 and from that day, my music career began. Being able to support and provide instruments to these young ambitious geniuses will carry on a chain of helping and encouraging the youth to go after their dreams.”

The Isaiah Katumwa Foundation projects with Lang have given away at least 4,000 music instruments to young talents across the world. The workshop will start on April 24 at the Performing Arts department of Makerere University, then April 25 at Greenhill Academy, Kibuli and finally at the African Institute of Music in Lubowa on April 26.
